The Tongan Tongue

The official language of Tonga is, of course, Tongan, alongside English, which was taught to Tongans by their British protectors. Tongan belongs to the expansive Malayo-Polynesian language family, and is closely related with Hawaiian, Samoan, and Niuean languages. In terms of usage, Tongan is often used in daily life and in some of the countryfs mass media, while English is more utilized for governmental and academic documents and purposes.
